GOD ALWAYS HAS A PLAN!

Exodus 14 is an amazing chapter!  It is clear from the beginning that God has a plan!  God always has a plan!

As they escape Egypt, God – through Moses – tells the Israelites exactly where to camp next to the sea.  This is apparently a very vulnerable spot that will entice Pharaoh to attack to try to recover his slave nation.  God’s intent is to – one last time – show Pharaoh who is really God!  And that’s what happened.

_________________________________

Eventually Pharaoh and his people realized what they had done.  They had – in one night – lost their entire force of slave labor!  He ordered up all of his chariots and quickly pursued the Israelites.  God was again working in Pharaoh’s heart, making him stubborn!

The Egyptians caught up to Israel by the sea.  As the Israelites saw them coming, fear gripped many.  There were two responses to this immediate threat:

Some cried out in terror to God.  Others ran to Moses and complained in bitter sarcasm:  “Weren’t the cemeteries large enough in Egypt so that you had to take us out here in the wilderness to die?  What have you done to us, taking us out of Egypt?  Back in Egypt didn’t we tell you this would happen?  Didn’t we tell you, ‘Leave us alone here in Egypt – we’re better off as slaves in Egypt than as corpses in the wilderness?’”  [vs.10-12]

TWO RESPONSES:

1.      Call out to God!

2.      Complain and blame!

There’s value in spending some time trying to determine which group you would have been in.  When the sky grows dark or the devastating news comes, do you call out to God or grumble and sulk?  This is a vital distinction.  The ones who are truly committed to God will know deep in their hearts that GOD ALWAYS HAS A PLAN!  And, they will trust in that plan!

But notice the grace and mercy of God!  Even in this story, the grumblers are spared!  God is patient and kind and works diligently with His people to get them to believe and trust in Him.  He’s doing that with you – right now!

Through all this threat, Moses believed!  He told the people, “'Don’t be afraid.  Stand firm and watch GOD do his work of salvation for you today.  Take a good look at the Egyptians today for you’re never going to see them again.  GOD will fight this battle for you.'  And then with a glance at the nay-sayers, he added, 'And you?  You keep your mouths shut!'”  [vs.13-14]

This is a vital lesson for leaders and pastors to learn.  Those who espouse negativity have to be silenced!  Negativity spreads like wildfire – it must be halted!  Negativity is NOT a faith environment!  Confrontation is awkward and hard!  Most pastors run from it instead of dealing with it!  As a result, the damage grows and the problems increase.  Being close to God and having had a glimpse of His plan allows us to stand strong and face the opposition with righteous zeal.  I learned - over time - that in most cases, the opposition folds in situations like this.

What happens next is REMARKABLE!  The angel of God that has been leading them moves from in front of the Israelites to their back – along with the pillar of cloud that has been leading them.  Together, they take up this position of protection between the two camps – throwing light on the Israelites and darkness on the Egyptians!  God is unfolding His plan!

Then, God tells Moses to hold his staff over the sea.  During the course of the night, an east wind dries up the sea and creates a walled walkway through the sea.  This wind is so persistent, that the people are able to cross the sea ON DRY LAND ALONG WITH ALL THEIR FLOCKS!  Once they’re all through, the angel and cloud move and the Egyptians hurry into the pathway through the sea.  But there are two problems:  The dung from all the flocks begins to clog their chariot wheels.  Also, God seems to allow some of the seawater to seep into the pathway.  The Egyptian forces bog down and get stuck!

TERROR STRIKES THEM!  They cry out: “Run from Israel!  GOD is fighting on their side and against Egypt!”  They begin to retreat.

At this moment, GOD instructs Moses to hold his staff over the sea again.  As he does so, the waters immediately break loose and flood the pathway.  Not one Egyptian survived!

And all Israel stood in utter amazement as they watched the dead bodies of the Egyptians wash up on the shoreline.  They immediately realized the tremendous power that GOD brought against the Egyptians.  They were in reverent awe before GOD and trusted in GOD and his servant Moses.

Notice that Moses’ stock has increased as a result of this supernatural intervention by GOD!  He had – under GOD’s direction – initiated this escape!  He had confronted Pharaoh repeatedly.  He had led them out of Egypt.  He had obeyed GOD throughout the process.  He had confronted the naysayers.  He had been faithful!

HOW'S THE ATMOSPHERE?

Many are familiar with the episode from Jesus' life when He visits His hometown of Nazareth.

Matthew 13:54-58     Mark 6:1-6      Luke 4:16-31

The thing about these passages that I would like to address is the fact that He was unable to do many miracles there because of their unbelief [Mt. 13:58;  Mk 6:5-6].

Matthew's wording is blunt and provocative:

And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.  [NASB]

Mark's wording is even more revealing:

And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands upon a few sick people and healed them.  [NASB]

The implication is clear!  Jesus needed an appropriate environment to be able to do miracles.

I know!  This sounds slanderous!  Hal is a heretic!  :-)

But consider other passages like Mark 8.

After feeding five thousand people, Jesus got into a boat with His disciples and headed for Dalmanutha.  The Pharisees immediately came to Him and pressed Him for a sign.

And sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, "Why does this generation seek for a sign?  [v.12 NASB]

Then Jesus got right back in the boat and headed for Bethsaida.

What happened here?  Why did He land and leave so quickly?  The implication is that He immediately saw that He wouldn't be able to accomplish much because of the opposition of the Pharisees.  Environment matters!

While sailing to Bethsaida they have some confusing misunderstandings about bread and yeast as Jesus tries to warn them about the contamination of the Pharisees and followers of Herod.  Interesting timing for this dialogue.

When they arrive in Bethsaida, a blind man was brought to him for healing.  The very first thing that Jesus did was to lead the blind man outside of the village!  You may remember this two-step healing.  Jesus spit on his eyes and then asked him if he could see.  The man could see, but his vision was blurry.  Next, Jesus touched his eyes and his vision became perfect!

Now, don't leave this story yet!  Before leaving the man and moving on, Jesus gave the man clear post-surgery instructions:  Do not even enter the village.  [v.26  NASB]

What's going on in this village?  Why didn't/couldn't Jesus heal the man while in this village?  Why did he warn this man not to even go into this particular village?

ENVIRONMENT MATTERS

I've tried hard to give you a fair picture of several passages that clearly indicate Jesus' need for an appropriate environment for healing/miracles to take place!

That being true, what about our environments today?

As a nation we have indisputably moved away from our Judeo-Christian foundation!  We are on the front end of blatant persecution of Christians.  It's not harsh - yet!  We're not being hauled away and placed in prisons.  But COVID did close many of our doors for an extended period of time.  So much for freedom of religion!  We have little reason to believe that this persecution will subside.  It's likely to grow!

The church is shrinking!  We've been closing churches vigorously since the turn of the century.  COVID threw gasoline on that trend, with many churches closing due to financial distress as a result of low attendances.  Evangelism is a rare occurrence in a world where we are told to mind our own business and respect the rights of others.

For decades we were a missionary-sending bastion of strength, wealth and evangelistic zeal.  Not so, today.  The church prospers in Asia and Africa while it shrinks in Europe, Britain and the United States.  We need pastors from Thailand and India to come and mentor our American pastors!

As a family, how are we doing?  You'll each have to answer this on your own.  Are you from a Christian family?  Are their passions, practices and priorities consistent with biblical teaching?  The word compromise has weakened many Christian people.  We've been hearing for decades now that Christians are no different from lost people.  We seem to have lost our distinctives.  No wonder that the church is dying.  If you're a Christ follower, answer the following tax-season question:  If you multiplied 2021's tithes by ten, could you live on it?  That's just one area;  there are so many more!

As a church, are we a healing and miracle environment?  The following prayer is taken from my newest novel, OVERWHELMED:

Blessed Jesus,
You have created this place for friendship!
If we aren’t friendly with every person that walks through these doors – then we have failed!
You’re the door-keeper here – You bring them to us so that we can lead them to You!
There are NO exceptions!
Help us never to be so busy that we’re distracted from this vital mission!
It’s all about You, Jesus!
Amen.

If some lost-but-seeking person walked into your church service this Sunday,

  • would they be warmly welcomed?
  • would someone invite them to sit with them?
  • would they connect to any liturgy being used?
  • would the music inspire them?
  • would the message be understandable to them?
  • would they leave feeling hopeful?
Churches are intimidating places!  Even if people are distressed and searching for meaning, it's unlikely that they would turn to the church.  If they did, however, do we provide them with a healing environment?  If Jesus wanted to touch and heal them, would He have to take them out of the building to do so?

As a follower of Christ, are you salting your community with the flavor of Christ?  Do you live Christian values consistently?  Does your light shine?  Or is it under a bushel?  Do your co-workers know that you're a Christian?

An environment reflects the nature of those in the group!  If we're not passionate about our service to Christ, it's unlikely that our church will be!  And if our church isn't energetic about serving Christ, it's unlikely that our community will be changed or influenced!  And if our communities aren't faith-filled, then what hope is there for our nation?

It has to start with me [and YOU]!

A Desire To Give

Over the years, I have seen God work His wonders in so many ways.  The simple fact that we often sing: "God is so good!" is SO TRUE!!!!

A memory just came back to me that is PRECIOUS!  I'd like to share it with you.

Our thirteen years at the Oakland FMC in East Liverpool, Ohio were blessed in so many ways!  Our worship evolved during those years into something of spiritual significance!  We tuned in to the growth of the praise and worship movement and incorporated it into our weekly worship very effectively.  We had some push-back, but with gentle, loving persistence, we forged ahead and gained God's blessing.

But we also saw some significant financial miracles.

One year, our leaders sensed the call of God to raise $100,000 for missions! Now, you must understand that we had NEVER raised even ten percent of that amount before!  It was an unreachable goal!  Yet, by faith, we embraced it!

One of the vehicles we used to raise this goal was the principle of 'unexpected money'.  We encouraged our people to pray that God would send 'unexpected money' into their household with the promise that we would simply pass it along toward the missions goal!

An older couple in the church approached me about their desire to help the church meet this amazing goal. Harold and Una explained that they were now on a fixed income and would not be able to assist in any significant way. I responded by encouraging them to pray that God would send some 'unexpected money' into their household.  They agreed to do so.  Months passed...

Then, they came one Sunday with bright eyes full of tears!  Harold's mother had been a godly woman who had raised her family in the church and in the Lord.  She had passed many years earlier.  However, Harold and his brothers received a letter from the local bank indicating that an account in her name had surfaced!  It was to be evenly distributed among her heirs.  Harold and Una were enabled to participate in that miraculous giving event for the church with joy as a reward for their faith!

About three-quarters of the way through that year, some began to doubt that we would be able to fulfill our goal.  We were far short of $100,000.  About that time, Ellen stood up one Sunday and asked to speak. She had never done anything like this before!  She was a tiny woman and usually very quiet;  she was not a leader in the church.  This is the story she told us:  [as best I can recall]

I was watching the 700 Club this week in my living room.  It came time for Pat Robertson to pray over all of the letters that he had received that week. He laid his hands on the letters and began to pray.  In the middle of his prayer, he stopped and looked at the camera.  He said:  "I have a word from the Lord for a church out there that's trying to raise $100,000 for missions! I'm going to do it! Hold strong to your faith!"

Mouths dropped open all across the congregation!  We were shocked that God would use Ellen and Pat Robertson as a vehicle to speak encouragement to us! But, our faith was definitely bolstered!

We came through Christmas still needing $26,000.  Our leaders decided that we should have an evening of praise and worship on December 31, during which we would receive one final offering.  We had about 200 (of all ages) show up for an awesome evening of prayer, praise and worship!  We took our offering and when the ushers returned from counting it, we had reached our goal!  What a night to remember!

The World Missions Department of the Free Methodist Church had heard about our challenge and had contacted our church.  Simultaneously, a couple had felt a call to go as missionaries to Brazil.  The Missions Department needed $100,000 to get them there.  We had no other specific leading for the money, so turned it all over to the Missions Department with great joy and a wonderful sense of having been used by God!

Glory to God!
