A DYNAMIC YOUNG LEADER

Reading II Chronicles 34 is a delightful change from its surrounding chapters because it finally presents a king of Judah who was thoroughly faithful to God! His name was Josiah and he became king when he was twelve years old.  Although it doesn’t say so, he was surely mentored by the priests.

When he had been king for eight years – he was still only a teenager – he began to seek the God of David his ancestor. [v.1]

Four years later, the twelfth year of his reign, he set out to cleanse the neighborhood of sex-and-religion shrines, and get rid of the sacred Asherah groves and the god and goddess figurines, whether carved or cast, from Judah. He wrecked the Baal shrines, tore down the altars connected with them, and scattered the debris and ashes over the graves of those who had worshiped at them. He burned the bones of the priests on the same altars they had used when alive. He scrubbed the place clean, Judah and Jerusalem, clean inside and out. [vs4-5]

Then he turned his attention toward the Temple and had it cleaned out of all its profane false gods and offensive items! His cleansing of the nation extended not only throughut Jerusalem but to the other cities of Judah!

Throughout Israel he demolished the altars and Asherah groves, pulverized the god and goddess figures, chopped up the neighborhood shrines into firewood. [v.7]

It was at this point that the men working on The Temple found the Book of God’s Revelation! It was brought to Josiah and as his servant began reading it to him – he ripped his robes in dismay. [v.19]

He immediately sought prayer from his associates who consulted the prophetess, Huldah,, to see what the king should do.

It’s always interesting to me that God was willing to use female prophets in the Old Testament, yet some question the use of female pastors today.

Her immediate response was to remind them of how angry God was with the people of Israel and Judah because of their horribly offensive turning to other gods!  She reminds Josiah’s messengers that God had already pronounced judgment against His people for their chronic sinfulness.

Then she proceeded with a message specifically for Josiah:

“And also tell the king of Judah, since he sent you to ask God for direction, God’s comment on what he read in the book: ‘Because you took seriously the doom of judgment I spoke against this place and people, and because you responded in humble repentance, tearing your robe in dismay and weeping before me, I’m taking you seriously. God’s word. I’ll take care of you; you’ll have a quiet death and be buried in peace. You won’t be around to see the doom that I’m going to bring upon this place and people.’” [vs.26-28]

The chapter ends with the following:

Josiah did a thorough job of cleaning up the pollution that had spread throughout Israelite territory and got everyone started fresh again, serving and worshiping their God. All through Josiah’s life the people kept to the straight and narrow, obediently following God, the God of their ancestors. [v.33]

I keep reporting a truth that Christian teachers need to incorporate into the closing of their lessons!

We must always end our lessons asking our students what we can learn from what we’ve studied today!  This is essential! What’s the value of knowing all of the details of the Bible unless we unpack its meaning for us TODAY?

I’ve had many good teachers in the churches that I’ve served, but few who understood this principle!

WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM II Chronicles 34?  Some suggestions:

·         Young people need mentoring if we hope for them to turn out healthy, balanced and with good perspective!

·         Maintaining a strong, consistent, meaningful relationship with God assures us of His presence and blessing on our lives!

·         Surrounding ourselves with wise, godly, faithful advisors assures us of a worthy legacy!

·         Godly advisors [even female] can be God’s way of directing our path and assuring us of His continuing presence!

·         Our spiritual impact is larger than we realize! God used Josiah’s innocence to direct the soul of the whole nation of Judah!

________________________________________________________

Kind and gracious God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit:

Thank You for Your faithfulness in watching over us!

For those of us who had godly direction in our younger years – WE ARE SO GRATEFUL!

For those who did not have that direction – but still found Your Way,

WE ARE SO GRATEFUL THAT YOU ARE THE HOUND OF HEAVEN

AND SOUGHT THEM OUT TO ENJOY ALL OF YOUR BENEFITS!

Give us the wisdom to seek out models – like that of Josiah –

to order up our lives in ways that will be pleasing to You!

Magnify our witness on Your behalf so that others may be directed – by our example –

to Your great and marvelous grace! We SO want to be a fruitful branch!

Above all:

Help us to live honorably before You 24/7/365!

We don’t want a record spotted by inconsistency and periods of back-sliding!

Give us the wisdom to seek You daily – even hourly!

To let our light shine persistently!

Day by day, dear Lord,
of thee three things I pray;
to see thee more clearly,
to love thee more dearly,
to follow thee more nearly,
day by day.

AMEN!

YOU CAN'T GET TO HEAVEN ON SOMEONE ELSE'S APRON-STRINGS

My brother-in-law, Dick, is now a widower [since June of this year]. He and my sister, Beverly, were married over 57 years! He fit into our family wonderfully - fully accepted. Bev got him to attend church with her and he saw her dedication to God on a daily basis through all of those years.

Dick is Italian! Early on in their relationship, God arranged for the Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church to have an Italian pastor - Dr. V. J. Mannoia. Dick loved this pastor and they had many jokes that they shared. This moved Dick even closer to his own experience of God in his life. It was probably around that time that Dick would occasionally lead our family in prayer. He would weep as he prayed and his voice would get very high with emotion!

But, his life still had all of the color that it had exhibited before. My parents loved Dick and he loved them! We became a family to Dick and enfolded him completely! He especially loved my mom - in spite of the fact that she insisted on overcooking meat [a travesty to Dick who was a meat-cutter for seventeen years]. 😂

Over the years, Dick ran hot and cold as far as attending church was concerned. His son, Scott, has been a Christian leader since his teens when he began working with youth! Scott is still a committed layman who has the passion of a pastor! His investment in Christian ministry is exceptional! He's also been a massive Christian influence on his dad!

But Dick's faith always seemed to be dependent on Beverly. She was the spiritual leader of their home! His connection to God was tied directly to hers.

UNTIL JUNE!

After caring lovingly for Bev for over three years while her condition with dementia deteriorated gradually but distinctly, Dick was alone!

Like so many others who have faced this reality, he struggles. He weeps a lot! He banters around the house doing his chores and passing time. When I call, he cries. He maintains that he's getting along okay. He repeatedly says that he's making it "one day at a time".

Debbie and I have been purposeful about going up twice since the memorial service. He seems to enjoy our visits and talks endlessly about his life. But this most recent visit was different.

He talked about the fact that his faith was anchored by Beverly. He recognized that he needed to have a personal relationship with God. So, he began sitting down at the breakfast table in their kitchen and reading his Bible. He tries to read a couple of chapters a day.

He told us: "Harold, sometimes I don't even know what I read. I don't understand it at all."

[It's apparent to me that he began reading in Genesis which can be overwhelming for anyone.]

But, he has stuck with it! He says that when he finishes reading for the day, he sits there and talks to God. He tells God that he doesn't understand much of what he read. But, he observes that the people he read about seem to have a lot of problems! So, Dick turns his lonliness and other problems over to God on a daily basis!

I interrupted him at this point by observing that a door to his garage - visible from his table - has a picture of Donald Trump on it. He laughed and said, "Yeah, Harold, I look at the picture and ask the Lord to help him with whatever he's doing today." We laughed together. But, isn't it remarkable that our president is being blessed every day by an 89-year-old, widower in Rochester, New York? It doesn't get any better than that!

Dick is managing! He is making the best of a heartbreaking situation! In spite of his loneliness, he is growing in his relationship with the Lord! He's praying for wisdom and direction about his home and his finances. He recognizes that he's blessed to have great neighbors who - for years - have helped him with his lawn, snow-removal, and leaf-gathering! They are good to Dick and genuinely care for him! He's thankful for lifelong friends who call him regularly to check up on him! He looks back on a life that was filled with abundance and plentiful pleasures! He has two precious kids in Scott and Heather, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren who love and cherish him! He has no regrets!

Bev's death was tragic, but also a relief. He misses her dearly - as do many of us [she was my last sibling to go to Heaven]!  But, to an extent, Dick exhausted himself caring for her 24/7. He's finally getting a chance to rest up and relax. He's even making plans for his future! He still has dreams and desires that he'd like to act on.

I share his story with you today as an encouragement! You can't get to Heaven because your parents were Christians! You can't get there because you go to church or are a member. You can't get there because you have been generous and treated people well all of your life. You won't arrive in Heaven because you lived a good life!

No! Sorry! These things don't really qualify you for entrance into Heaven - even though the world will tell you that they do...

You will be accepted into Heaven because you've developed a personal relationship with God through Jesus and the Holy Spirit! This relationship will gradually but certainly transform you into a person who genuinely and supremely loves God. God will use you to influence other people who know and relate to you! Your example may be the cause of family, neighbors, friends [even people in line with you at Walmart] to seek a deeper, more meaningful relationship with God as well!

YOU MAY VERY WELL BE THE INSTRUMENT THAT GOD USES TO GET SOMEONE IN YOUR SPHERE OF INFLUENC INTO HEAVEN AS WELL!

THOUGHTS ON LEAVING THE CHURCH

In reviewing an old blog, I came across a comment I made that startled me:

"I feel like the only way to be a missional follower of Christ would be to leave the church as I know it!"

Did I really write that?

It was something I wrote on the blank page at the end of a book I had read [which has been a custom of mine for years]. Clearly the book - which I have since given away - addressed the issue of getting outside of our buildings to influence the world toward Christ and His Kingdom principles.

This has been the theme of many books written in the 21st century. Creativity and innovation are not exactly premium resources in most established churches. Too often these qualities are expressed - not by generative thinking and deliberation - but by copying what leading churches with highly recognizable pastors do. The problem becomes noticeable when the smaller church doesn't have the resources or recognition that the larger churches have!

In his 2005 book, REVOLUTION, pollster and church clinician, George Barna, gave us a wake-up call announcing that already - by that time - massive numbers of believers had vacated the church.

He was not decrying their departure. Rather, he was trying to help the established church realize that there is a growing group of deeply committed followers of Christ, many of whom simply have chosen not to affiliate themselves any longer with the organized church.

He writes:

"The United States is home to an increasing number of Revolutionaries. These people are devout followers of Jesus Christ who are serious about their faith, who are constantly worshipping and interacting with God, and whose lives are centered on their belief in Christ. Some of them are aligned with a congregational church, but many of them are not. The key to understanding Revolutionaries is not what church they attend [or IF they attend*]. Instead it's their complete dedication to being thoroughly Christian by viewing every moment of life through a spiritual lens and making every decision in light of biblical principles. These are individuals who are determined to glorify God daily through every thought, word and deed in their lives." [p.8]

* my addition

Not many will confirm my thought of leaving the Church in order to actually BE the Church. But - in reality, many [if not most] churches fail to mobilize their people toward the mission of Christ to "seek and to save the lost."

One of our Free Methodist bishops taught - well into the 21st century and based on actual church statistics - that it was taking [at least in our denomination] 85 Christians to bring one person to Christ per year! How can anyone miss the pathetic nature of this stat?

The evidence is well known that within seven years of joining a church, a person will have replaced almost all of their lost friends and co-workers with Christian friends from church. How can we impact lost and hurting people if we only associate with Christian people?

We have to admit that there is an argument for leaving the church [as we know it] with the hope of being a greater influence for Christ by venturing out and making friends with sinners.  According to Barna, we’re already realizing this reality!

If Jesus is repeatedly accused of being a friend of sinners, isn’t that something we should give greater consideration to? It has to do with letting our light shine in a dark place. How bright can our light be when we’re shining in the midst of a bunch of other lights? Isn’t it obvious that our light will shine best in a darkened environment!

I’ve served as a pastor for over forty years. Transitioning a church from ‘plateaued’ to ‘growing’ is a phenomenally hard task that takes time, focus and determination!

Just maintaining a plateaued church takes almost no energy or creativity at all! It would be like navigating in a self-driving car!

But having been a part of seeing three churches make that transition, I can report that the end result is excitement, joy, peace and a genuine anticipation for worship times!  This is a church where the people will authentically say with David: “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the House of the Lord!’” [Psalm 122:1].

In these churches, anticipation is high, joy is common, love is expressed, concessions are made willingly and Kingdom growth is front-and-center! To be frank, in this kind of church, no one gets to have it all ‘their way’. Everyone lives with some measure of discontent with the goal of maintaining unity and preserving the priorities of Christ!

At one of these churches, we lighted a large candle on Sundays when someone had made a decision for Christ as a result of the influence of one of our members. When people entered our foyer-door, many would slip to the back of the sanctuary to see if the candle was lighted! That’s ANTICIPATION AND EXPECTATION!

But many pastors today aren’t knowledgeable about how to direct and initiate this kind of transition. Perhaps they lack the patience and courage required to address the stagnancy of the church and point in the direction of hope and change? Wisdom would seem to send them to a mentor who has had proven experience in bringing about this kind of transformation? But I don't know of any cases where this kind of pursuit is happening.

Without this kind of transformational change in the way we do church, it is likely that more and more will – like me – wonder if it might be better to just leave the church – as I know it – and strike out as one of Barna’s ‘revolutionaries’.

A CHINA STORY: A HIGH SCHOOL FRIEND

It was just about this time of year in 2013, that we were seriously deliberating whether or not to return to China for a second year. Our initial commitment was for one year. God used several things that happened to us to guide us to commit to a second year. The following was one of those things. [By the way, we actually stayed for three years! 🙂]

__________________________________________________________________

When I was leaving our hotel one morning, a high school boy approached me with a smile and said: "Hi! Would you like to be my friend?"

His English was good. His charm was over-the-top! I couldn't help but respond: "Sure! I'd be glad to be your friend!"

He smiled a big smile and then asked for my phone number.

I balked at this request and this seemed to surprise him. He asked me why I didn't want to give him my phone number.

I told him that I was reluctant to give my phone number to a stranger.

He responded: "But we're friends!"

I had to move on, so we said a quick 'Good-bye' and I headed off on my way.

However, I immediately found God on my shoulder asking me why I came to China. I responded quickly and chased him down. I told him that I changed my mind and gave him my phone number!

That evening he texted me 😆.

[The text exchange follows:]

王小贱 [This is his name - I knew him as Steve] 9:13:40 PM
wow
I have a question

Hal 9:13:57 PM
Fire away!

王小贱 9:15:40 PM
Why u changed ur mind that day?

王小贱 9:17:35 PM
could u tell me?

Hal 9:17:56 PM
Well, to be honest: I felt that God wanted me to reconsider and accept your offer of friendship.

王小贱 9:18:59 PM
wow。

Hal 9:19:10 PM
Yeah.

王小贱 9:19:15 PM
If I want 2 believe god,what should I do

Hal 9:19:57 PM
Steve, talk to Him!
I do it all the time!

王小贱 9:20:18 PM
Who?God?

Hal 9:20:27 PM
Yep!
I just talk with Him like I talk with you.

Hal 9:21:28 PM
A lot of the time I try to get alone so that I can actually talk with Him out loud!

王小贱 9:21:49 PM
A priest had already let me join it,he asked me 2 read some words

Hal 9:22:25 PM
What kind of priest?

王小贱 9:22:48 PM
But I dont have a cross and i dont know the rules
I went 2 Macao in 2010,and there has a big church,very famous,

Hal 9:23:49 PM
It's not about rules, it's about having a day-to-day relationship with God!

王小贱 9:24:18 PM
The priest asked me 2 read some words.

Hal 9:25:36 PM
I read the Bible every day. It's important to me. But it's a big book and can be very confusing to someone reading it for the first time.

王小贱 9:25:38 PM
He gave me some books about god

Hal 9:26:06 PM
Just start by talking with Him! Keep it simple.
See what happens?

王小贱 9:26:41 PM
Now?
I don't have a cross .

Hal 9:27:44 PM
You don't have to have anything special to talk to Him. He's always near you! Always!

王小贱 9:28:41 PM
I want 2 try it now .Doesnt he sleeping now?
Ok,I try it now

Hal 9:29:50 PM
Nope, He doesn't sleep. He knows you already and loves you more than you can imagine!

王小贱 9:31:40 PM
I had try it
Nothing happened

Hal 9:32:33 PM
Yep. That's the way it seems sometimes. But I trust that He hears me. I'm absolutely sure He does!
Be sure to ask Him to help you with your examination for the military! I believe He will!

王小贱 9:33:27 PM
I believe him ,too

Hal 9:34:06 PM
It's a good start! I'm proud of you, Steve!

王小贱 9:34:50 PM
Thanks
Am worried now.

Hal 9:35:26 PM
I'm going to go to bed now. I get up really early to read my Bible and talk with Him! :-)
Worried about waht?

王小贱 9:36:04 PM
My classmates

Hal 9:36:16 PM
What about them?

王小贱 9:37:37 PM
Some of them really don't care their life, their future

Hal 9:37:54 PM
That makes me sad!

王小贱 9:38:00 PM
Just some small problems, they will fight
We are all Chinese ,we are all humen
Why should we fight ,I really can't understand

Hal 9:38:52 PM
Everybody has hard times. Teen years are especially hard to get through!
Be strong! Make good decisions!
Hang out with the right people.

Hal 9:39:57 PM
You can be a good influence on your friends!

PENTECOST!

Compared to Christmas and Easter, only a very small portion of people will recognize today as a holy day of celebration.  I haven’t seen any flyers for ‘Pentecost Sales’. I haven’t noticed any ‘doves’ or ‘flames of fire’ hanging from the trees of my neighbors. The stores and restaurants haven’t been any more crowded than normal.

Let’s face it, for the majority of people – Christian or not Christian – this is just another Sunday.

Some churches will call attention to this day and the 2nd chapter of Acts. Others may not.

So, what does this day represent? Why is it important?

It signaled the arrival of the new leader of the Church! The Third Person of the Trinity – the Holy Spirit – arrived with a grand demonstration of His power and presence!

Make no mistake, this is the same God who led Israel through the trials of the Old Testament! This was the same Jesus who arrived in a manger, grew up to become a great Teacher, performed miracles, healed people, preached messages, raised the dead, and laid His life down as the perfect sacrifice for our sin!

Pentecost triggers the full realization of a triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit! It took the New Testament Church four hundred years to sort this all out and understand it. They were kind enough to pass it along to us – and all generations!

God exists in three Persons that are equal, completely unified, have all existed for eternity. Once they came to more fully understand these truths, they passed them on to us in the form of a confession we know as The Apostle’s Creed:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
      creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
      He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      was crucified, died, and was buried;
      he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
      He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
      the holy catholic* church,
      the communion of saints,
      the forgiveness of sins,
      the resurrection of the body,
      and the life everlasting. Amen.

*that is, the true Christian church of all times and all places

On this day – in the 1st century – after days of prayer with around 120 people in an upper room in obedience to the clear instructions of Jesus before He ascended into Heaven, something dynamic happened!!!!!!!!

The Holy Spirit showed up – just as Jesus had promised!

On this occasion, He revealed His presence with flames of fire that settled over the heads of those who had been praying together. They ALL heard the sound of a mighty rushing wind, yet there was no wind! They were immediately filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages “by the power the Holy Spirit was giving them.” [Acts 2:4 All quotes from the NCV unless otherwise noted]

They burst out of the room and hit the crowded streets of Jerusalem where they began proclaiming the Gospel to the crowds gathered to celebrate the harvest festival or Feast of Weeks!

At least one very large gathering took place as a result of Peter standing in a prominent place and preaching. His message was clear and simple: “Change your hearts and lives and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” [Acts 2:38]

“About three thousand people were added to the number of believers that day.” [Acts 2:41]

So, what does this day mean to us as followers of Christ?

SOME SUGGESTIONS:

·         We are still and have always been under the direction of a triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit!

·         We live in the age of the Spirit! It is the Holy Spirit of God that is directing the affairs of the Church today! We might be wise to be praying to Him and seeking His direction in our lives and in our churches!

·         The Holy Spirit is still filling people today!!! When He comes into a person, there is a rejuvenating of that person that awakens them spiritually and charges them with passion for the spiritually lost!

·         The Book of Acts makes it clear that the sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit - in a person’s life and in the Church - is passion for the lost and growth in the Church!

COULD THEY BE ANGELS AND WE DON'T REALIZE IT?

A few years ago, when the illegal immigration was beginning to have a dynamic impact on our American culture, I was still working as a Lyft driver.  I clearly noticed an increase in riders who could not speak English.  The more I encountered this phenomenon, the more I realized the opportunity it offered for relevant and evangelistically aggressive congregations to make a difference in their broader community by offering ‘English-as-a-second-language’ classes.  Although this could have been done in the churches own facilities, I felt that it would be more effective if these classes were offered in a neutral setting.

Now we realize that our culture was flooded with millions of immigrants who were struggling to find a means of survival in a strange and complex culture.  Churches could have stepped into that gap to help.  After all, many of these immigrants were actually Christian people and families who were routed to various parts of our country with no associations and few resources.

Although my purview is strictly limited, I did not become aware of any churches that took advantage of this opportunity to serve.  Nor did I read of or hear of churches offering this vital service to a needy part of our population.

Our holy scriptures include clear instructions for how we are to behave when situations like this confront us:

Leviticus 19:33-34  [NASB]

“When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong.  The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt; I am the LORD”

Matthew 25:35  [NASB]

“For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in…”

Hebrews 13:2  [NASB]

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.”

Galatians 5:14  [NASB]

“For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’”

However, for those churches – as well as us as individuals – who did not respond to this language barrier crisis, there is a looming crisis of even greater magnitude on the horizon today!

The newly installed Trump administration will inevitably remove many of the support systems and funding programs that proliferated under Biden’s leadership [whether or not we agreed with these funding priorities].

It only takes a little imagination to recognize that there are millions now living among us who will – as of today – be living in fear of being discovered and deported from this great country.  It is likely that these immigrants will go to even greater extremes to be invisible and under the radar!

Ah, what a great comfort a church family could be to individuals and families living under this constant threat of eviction complimented by diminishing resources and the high level of disdain expressed by the majority of Americans.

Re-read the verses above!  Not all of these people crossed into our country illegally.  Many were processed at the border by official border agents.  They were, in turn, offered bus tickets to major U.S. cities where – in many cases – they were provided housing and even financial support.  Although President Trump is right in saying that some of these individuals have been dumped on our culture by countries that were trying to rid themselves of undesirables, that is not the case for all of these people.  Many simply saw that the door was open to one of the greatest countries in the world!  Why not try to improve themselves?

But consider the potential for church families to create a safe haven for those living in this fear.  I’m not suggesting that we harbor these individuals and families.  I’m simply suggesting that making inroads to this community could allow us to be a great blessing to those who will now be living in daily fear.

It is likely that we are all in agreement with a plan to locate the horrific criminal and gang-related immigrants who have done unspeakable harm and have proliferated the increase in fentanyl deaths in our country.

However, there are many others who came simply because the door was open for four years.  Have these ‘strangers’ and ‘aliens’ been welcomed by the American Church?  Have they been embraced?  Have they found us to be a welcoming and helping part of the American community?

You can answer that question by looking at the impact of your own church…

How many are hovelling together in cramped conditions trying to survive this terribly frigid winter that is such a new experience from these who have come from significantly warmer climates?  How many are sorry that they made this venture?  How many long for the comforts they may have left behind in their own homeland, but have no resources to return?  How many are struggling to survive – or who will be with the withdrawal of support systems that have been sustaining them?  How many will now be living in fear of ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] agents showing up to brutally remove them from the small haven they’ve been able to carve out as unwelcome visitors?

But don’t look for an overwhelming response from our American churches.  They’re too focused on planning the Sunday worship service and maintaining the traditions and distinctions that are so important.  Like it or not, it’s a VERY rare church in America that is actually acting on the scriptures listed above!

"LOOK FOR THE HELPERS, FRED!"

When John the Baptist – during a discouraging time while he was in prison – sent a message to Jesus asking, “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?”, here is the message that Jesus sent back to John:

“Go back and report to John what you hear and see:  The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor…”

The proof of Jesus’ messiahship was actual changed lives!

This is quite different from the annual reports of many churches today.  I compiled those annual reports for over forty years.  Sometimes I had to be creative to try to show that we’d made any impact at all on our community.

[They often sounded something like this:]

We averaged 78 in Morning Worship which was a slight increase over last year.  We had an average attendance of 39 in Sunday School.  We had a weekly prayer meeting that was attended by 7-12 people.  We held a Vacation Bible School for a week in the summer with 25 children attending.  We published a monthly newsletter and mailed it to our constituency.  We had several men’s gatherings.  We participated in the community Thanksgiving service.  We took our turn serving the community food bank twice during the year.  We had one conversion, no new members and no baptisms.

Do you hear the difference between that report and the one Jesus sent to John?

How can we make the kind of difference that Jesus made?  After all, we ARE His representatives – as though He was making His appeal through us!  (II Corinthians 5:20)

I mentioned that this wake-up call changed the way I led the church.  I was determined to challenge the church to be relevant and to make a difference in our community.  By God’s grace – and with His help – I believe we made some significant strides in that direction!

We must believe that we are here for a purpose!  We are in the precise location where He can use us for His purposes.  We must also understand that our impact will sometimes be united and sometimes individual.

Listen to Luke’s report from Acts 9:36-43,

In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Please come at once!”

Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.

Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive. This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord…

Now the first thing we notice is that Tabitha had a ministry all her own!  She made clothes for the poor!  This wasn’t apparently a ministry of her church.  She simply had a gift of sewing and dedicated it to the Lord!  She came up with this idea on her own – possibly under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit!

We also notice that Peter was clearly moved by Tabitha’s death.  But he didn’t join the mourners, he spoke to her and raised her up to added years of service!  Peter exercised the apostolic gifts that God had bestowed on him.  Like His Master, Jesus, Peter spoke with authority and Tabitha came back to life!

And finally we notice that the community was impacted!  This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord…

Because this incident is recorded for us in the book of Acts, it is clearly a picture of what Christ expects of His people and His church!

It seems to me that a much larger portion of our time and energy should be directed toward those around us who are facing trials, challenges, fears, need, desperation and despair.  We should be seeking them out!  We should be applying our creativity toward finding them, helping them and serving them!  If we did this, perhaps our annual reports would be a bit more exciting…

Children’s television personality Fred Rogers said that when he was a little boy and heard about an accident or natural disaster, his mother would tell him, “Look for the helpers, Fred.  Whenever something terrible happens there are always people who hurry to help.

Here is the challenge for the church in laymen’s terms!  As a community of believers in Christ, we must ask ourselves if we are among those “helpers” who rush in at times of crisis.

Listen, every community faces crises from time to time!  People are displaced by fires or floods.  Storms damage homes and people’s lives are disrupted.  Acts of violence occur and families are plunged into grief.  Plants shut down causing massive unemployment and families are forced to redefine themselves and even caused to relocate to continue their lives.  These kinds of dilemmas are unending.  They’re happening frequently to varying degrees in most of our communities.  And when they happen, we – the church, the people of God – need to be among those who are running in with assistance!

It seems to me that we should be far more willing to cooperate with other churches, other helping agencies, and even local government to address these kinds of critical times.

If this were more true, then our churches would be considered an invaluable asset to our communities.  People would see us as valuable contributors to the general well-being of our community!

I read a book that analyzed the responses to several major crises, including the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and the 2011 tsunami that hit Tohoku, Japan on March 11, 2011.

These two tragedies – though greatly different in type and circumference – reveal incredible pictures of those that Fred Roger’s Mom referred to!

On that horrible day in 2011, a 9.0 earthquake shook the east coast of Japan for three to five minutes.  Roads buckled, bridges cracked, bookcases toppled and some buildings collapsed.  The earthquake had such force that it jolted Japan’s largest island eight feet closer to North America.  The earthquake hit with such force that it caused the earth to shift on its axis, reducing daylight by a few microseconds, upsetting GPS monitoring stations around the world, and releasing six hundred million times the energy of the atomic bombs that fell on Japan in 1945.

After that violent five minutes, all was still for forty-five minutes as residents picked themselves up and surveyed the damage.  Then came the wave.

A wall of water, first taking shape out in the ocean by the quake’s epicenter, accelerated to 500 mph as it sped toward land.  The coastal region of Tohoku had subsided two feet during the quake, opening wide the gate for the onrushing wave, so that the tsunami crashed over protective sea walls like a giant stepping over a curb.  Videos shot on iphones by eyewitnesses (some retrieved from corpses) resemble the special effects scenes from a horror movie:  ships, houses, and trucks tossed around like toys;  a modern airport suddenly submerged under water;  a nuclear reactor tower exploding in a thick black cloud.

When people in the region began to realize their peril, they began rushing to upper levels in buildings or trying to run up mountains to safety.  Over the next hours the water rolled in and washed back out seventeen times!  All the while, frantic cries for help could be heard.

When it finally ended, a dense forest was gone.  Over twenty thousand were dead – many washed out to sea and never recovered.  150,000 evacuees lost their homes; 50,000 of them are still living in temporary housing. More than 120,000 buildings were destroyed, 278,000 were half-destroyed and 726,000 were partially destroyed.  Please understand that the devastation is truly indescribable!

A Christian author visited Tohoku exactly a year later.  As he toured the area he couldn’t help but notice the many cars among the debris.  He wondered out loud:  “I wonder how many automobiles were destroyed…”  Immediately, a Japanese colleague pulled out his smart phone and googled the answer:  410,000.

During the same visit he saw a huge ocean freighter – nearly the size of a football field – sitting in a residential area.   No one has any idea how to get it back to the ocean a half-mile away.

But then, the “helpers” began to rush in!  Teams arrived quickly from the Philippines, Germany, Singapore, and the United States.  Organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Samaritan’s Purse mobilized immediately after the earthquake and were still sending crews a year later!

Samaritan’s Purse crews were living in cramped communal housing and working long hours without pay.  One such worker said:

“We don’t proselytize.  We don’t need to – the people know why we’re here.  We’re simply followers of Jesus trying to live out His commands.  Just before handing owners the key to their new homes, we ask if we can pray a blessing on the house.  So far, no one has turned us down.”

Although the church in Japan represents only one per cent of the population, Christian organizations took a lead in rebuilding efforts, and some Japanese churches became distribution centers for food and supplies.  One church sheltered more than a thousand evacuees the first few months after the tsunami.

What wonderful models of Christian love these examples were and are.

John Marks, a producer for television’s 60 Minutes, went on a two-year quest to investigate evangelicals, a group he had grown up in and later rejected.  He wrote a book about his quest called Reasons to Believe:  One Man’s Journey Among the Evangelicals and the Faith He Left Behind.  The church’s response to Hurricane Katrina turned the corner for him and became a key reason to believe.  One Baptist church in Baton Rouge fed 16,000 people a day for weeks;  another housed 700 homeless evacuees.  Years after the hurricane, and long after federal assistance had dried up, a network of churches in surrounding states was still sending regular teams to help rebuild houses.

Most impressively to Marks, all these church efforts crossed racial lines and barriers in the Deep South.  One worker told him, “We had whites, blacks, Hispanics, Vietnamese, and a good old Cajun (working together)…we just tried to say, ‘Hey, let’s help people.  This is our state.  We’ll let everybody else sort out that other stuff.  We’ve got to cook some rice.’”

In other words, people are desperate and have massive needs – let’s get her done!  In most cases, these people and agencies didn’t clamor for attention or pimp for the cameras.  As a matter of fact, much of what I’m sharing with you today – you have never heard before!  The news covers a story for a few days and then moves on.  The onrush of “helpers” rarely catches any camera time.  Besides, they don’t do it for public recognition.  They do it out of obedience to their Master!

In my humble opinion, every church needs to continually ask itself,

·      “Why does God have us here in this precise location?”

·      “What does He want us doing to impact hurting people in our area?”

·      “How can we use the resources and connections within our congregation to make a difference in our community?”

As a church leader for four decades, I can tell you that you have to be intentional about asking these questions over and over and over…   There is a strong, natural tendency for us to drift back to services and programs that serve ourselves.  It takes intention to maintain an outward focus!  After all, we’re not in this for what we can get out of it;  we’re in this for what we can give through it!

We must push ourselves to get past the good intentions phase.  Good intentions salve our consciences and relieve our guilt without actually doing anything.  I recently contacted Samaritan’s Purse to inquire about being part of one of their clean-up teams.  I have talked with nearly a dozen people since who told me they’ve always wanted to do that – but I know of no one who actually has.

All of us are moved with compassion!  People want to make a difference.  They need examples!  They need leaders who will sign them up and organize the work.  If churches would be better organized to be first-responders, I think they’d see two results:

1.   They’d be surprised to see how many people would be willing to help;  and

2.  They’d soon find that their sanctuary didn’t have enough seating capacity!

People expect us to help!  It’s what Jesus would do!

At the Sandy Hook shooting - which was not a natural disaster but one of human making – the stories of response are amazingly encouraging (although most of us have never heard them).

·      The state patrol assigned an officer to each family to protect them from intrusion.

·      Freezers full of food were delivered within days.

·      There are lots of Italians in the northeast, and one family with a full freezer begged, “Please – no more pasta!”

·      Christmas presents beyond counting arrived from around the country and world.

·      60,000 teddy bears and stuffed animals were given;  it took months to deliver them to homeless shelters.

·      People came from all across our country with their juggling acts, free pies, pets, and counseling booths.

One touching gesture came from other school children.  At the suggestion of a Sandy Hook parent, the president of Connecticut’s PTA sent out an email asking them to cut out snowflakes to help decorate the new school where Sandy Hook students would attend.  The request went viral.  Within two days the snowflakes started to arrive on UPS trucks and even semi-trailers.  Thousands and thousands of snowflakes arrived from every state and fifty foreign countries.  It was an avalanche of snow!  Many included handwritten notes by children. And the underlying message was clear:  YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

Let me return to John Marks one more time.

“I would argue that [Hurricane Katrina] was a watershed moment in the history of American Christianity…nothing spoke more eloquently to believers, and to unbelievers who were paying attention, than the success of a population of believing volunteers measured against the massive and near-collapse of secular government efforts. The storm laid bare an unmistakable truth.  More and more Christians have decided that the only way to reconquer America is through service.  The faith no longer travels by the word.  It moves by the deed.”

Would you like to be part of this movement to reclaim America for Christ?

Would you like to be part of a church that truly desires and plans to make a difference in its community?

Would you like to turn your faith into action?

Remember Tabitha!  It’s not always a church-driven momentum.  Sometimes it simply means assessing our own skills, resources, interests and connections to discover a way that we can personally make a difference.

Remember too, that your church has only one Head – and that’s Jesus Christ!  Continually evaluate your potential as His Body and then seek to please Him!

AND HOW WILL THEY HEAR WITHOUT A PREACHER?

This title is a quote from Romans 10:14 [NASB].

Granted - this is not a hot topic in our world today.  However, for those who think a little more deeply, it is an important question.

During the twentieth century, there was a great concern expressed by the Church for those who had not yet been reached by the gospel.  Although there are still regions that are unreached, the electronic means have significantly increased!

However, this is not the purpose of this blog.

Rather, I am excited by Paul's arguments in Romans which are so sound and reasonable and cannot be ignored.

He begins by noting that the Creation itself declares the identity of God.

Psalm 19 concurs:

"The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.  Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge."  [vs.1-2 plus it continues for four more verses. NASB]

Referring to people who have not heard the gospel, Paul writes:

"These people are not ignorant about what can be known of God, because He has shown it to them with great clarity. From the beginning, Creation in its magnificence enlightens us to His nature.  Creation itself makes His undying power and divine identity clear, even though they are invisible; and it voids the excuses and ignorant claims of these people..."  [The Voice Bible]

[Keep in mind that The Voice Bible places words in italics words that are not included in the original texts.]

But Paul believes that nature isn't God's only [or primary] means of communicating with unbelievers!  He continues his teaching in chapter 2:14-16,

For instance, some outsiders who are not required to follow the law often live quite naturally by its teachings. Even though the law wasn’t given to them, in themselves they have the law. Here’s the thing: their lives demonstrate that God has inscribed the law’s teachings on their hearts. On judgment day, their consciences will testify for them, and their thoughts will both accuse and defend them. This good news given to me declares that this affirmation and accusation will take place on that day when God, through Jesus, the Anointed One, judges every person’s life secrets.

Paul is convinced that God and His truth are embedded in the mind of every person who has ever lived!

This teaching raises many question - all of which can't be addresses here.  [Plus, I am not capable of providing all of the answers  😉]

For instance, if God's truth is embedded in the mind of every person, why are not more around the globe confessing Him as God?

Good Question!  I would suggest two possible answers:

  1. Evil also exists in our world and opposes the truth of God!
  2. Free will also is the possession of every person.  They get to evaluate the evidence and make individual choices!

Here's another: Could a person who has never heard the gospel come to a realization of God and thereby gain assurance by God's approval of their lives that would insure their entrance to Heaven?

Great Question!  I believe that the Apostle Paul would argue that they could indeed gain this assurance!  What God has provided through nature, His embedded truth, and the direction available through His Holy Spirit can and has been enough for many to come to faith in Him!

One more: Does the fact that God has been so proactive in providing a way for people to come to a knowledge of Him mean that we can slack off in our evangelistic efforts?

Reasonable Question.  Absolutely not!  Because the enemy is at work in the world trying to suppress these provisions that God has made, we must be all-the-more aggressive in countering the influences of evil!

The title of this blog quotes a verse that is also from the Apostle Paul!  But this global effort to see masses come to faith in Christ will take more than preachers and more than missionaries!  We all stand with the Apostles as they receive the Great Commission! We are to "Go", "make disciples" and "baptize"  [Matthew 28:19-20].

"Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God."  [II Corinthians 5:20 NASB]

GOD HAS DONE - AND IS DOING - HIS PART!

NOW, WE MUST DO OUR PART!

COMPLACENCY IS OUR ENEMY!

I'll be speaking about complacency this Sunday, so when I read the following words from Max Lucado's first book - ON THE ANVIL - they registered with me:

We're complacent to God.  Churchgoers pack the pews and sing to the back of someone's head.  Fellowship is lost in formality.  One, two, three times a week people pay their dues by walking in the door, enduring a ritual, and walking out [this book was published in 1985, who goes to church three times a week today?].  Guilt is appeased.  God is insulted.  [p.32]

This might not have impacted me quite so much except for what I read just moments before from Richard and Renee Stearns' book, HE WALKS AMONG US.

There I read the story of Roth Ourng who is a survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia in the 1970's.  Needless to say, he was suspicious of World Vision workers who showed up in his community in the 1990's.  They set up a tuberculosis clinic, worked with the children in school, and taught farmers new agricultural techniques.  But Roth did not trust them.

Eventually, he questioned the program director and demanded to know why he was there.  The answer: "We are followers of Jesus Christ, and we are commanded to love our neighbors."   Then the man gave Roth a Bible in the Khmer language.

In Genesis, Roth discovered the God "I had always wondered about, the God who created the world."  Eventually God led Roth and a friend to a Cambodian pastor who explained the gospel to him.

Stearns comments: "When I met Roth, he was the pastor of a little house church with eighty-three members.  When I asked him where he had found so many members, he answered, 'After I discovered Jesus, I had to tell everyone I knew.  These are my sheep; this is my flock.'"  [pp.123-125]

This is the opposite of complacency!  Look at the love in those eyes!

No pews - just passion!

Lord of the harvest,

Help us to break the bonds of complacency and discover the joy of sharing You with our family, friends, neighbors and co-workers!

Help me to be responsible for many who will enter the Kingdom of God through doors that I open as a result of my love for You!

FOR THE KINGDOM'S SAKE!

AMEN!
