ONE OF OUR MANY HILARIOUS FAMILY MEMORIES - BAT STORY #2

I was leading an Official Board meeting at the Oakland Free Methodist Church on a week night.  The phone rang - it was for me!

The panicked voice of my wife informed me that there was an emergency and I needed to come right home.

I adjourned the meeting and flew home.

At the time, we lived in a massive, three-story home on East Fifth Street in downtown East Liverpool.  We affectionately called it:  MANIAC MANSION!

When I busted throught the front door, I couldn't believe my eyes!

Troy and Tracie had helmits on and were wrapped in afgans.  They each had a tennis racket in their hand.  Instant confusion - what kind of emergency would cause them to dress like this?

Debbie was on the couch - also covered with an afgan.  As I asked what was wrong, a bat flew into the room and swooped all of us!  Instant pandamonium!  We all hit the deck!  The bat flew in circles through the living room, the entrance-way, the hall, the dining room, and back into the living room!

We were all screaming!

It finally flew upstairs and landed on one of the walls.

I didn't know what to do, so I ran to the phone and called our good friend, Junior Lamp.  Junior lived in Newell, West Virginia.  It took him fifteen minutes to get to our house.

He walked upstairs and picked the bat off the wall.  He spread its wings and gave us a chance to inspect it closely.  Then he released it on the front porch!

Bat emergency #2 averted!

ONE OF OUR MANY HILARIOUS FAMILY MEMORIES: BAT STORY #1

When our kids were young, we tried to find alternative celebrations for Halloween weekend.  When they were small, we took them to Chuck E. Cheese.  When they got older, we went on late fall camping weekends;  sometimes even renting a cabin.

This particular year, we rented one at Clear Creek State Park near Cooks Forest in Pennsylvania.  Travis was around thirteen, Troy was nine and Tracie, eight.  They were obviously old enough to be able to read AND SPELL!

We arrived, moved in, carried wood, and got a fire started in the pot-belly stove.  While walking around, we saw a buck with a couple of doe.  He actually followed us back to our cabin - it was wierd!  That night, the buck banged its antlers against the corner of our cabin for about ten minutes.  Strange!

The next night, we were settling in to sleep.  There were bunk beds against each wall.  Deb and I slept on the bottoms with Travis above her and Troy above me.  Tracibeth slept on a chaise lounge between the bunk beds.

When the lights were out, Deb thought she sensed something buzz past her;  then again.  In the darkness, she called my name and then spelled:  B - A - T.  With that, all three kids screamed!  Travis and Troy dove out of their top bunks onto Tracie.  We all covered up with our blankets.

Eventually, Debbie shamed me into getting up and turning the lights on.  Sure enough, we could see the bat high on one wall.

For the next hour we tried everything we could to get it to fly out of the cabin.  Nothing worked.  Our squeels and screams must have surely amused and puzzled our cabin-neighbors.  We laughed till we were nearly sick!

Then spent the next two nights sleeping - not so soundly - UNDER THE COVERS!

LIVING WITHOUT POWER

Debbie and the kids were out running errands.  Deb had to stop to drop some things off to a friend who lived in a cul-de-sac.

As she turned down the street, Tracie (who had just begun to read) commented:  "Mom, I feel sorry for the people who live on this street."

Deb:  "Why, honey?"

Tracie:  "Because they don't have any electricity."

Deb:  "What makes you think that?"

Tracie:  "Because the sign says 'No Outlet'"
Lots of people are living without spiritual power today.  They're trying to make it on their own.  They think they can get by without God.

Many acquire wealth, prestige, even popularity;  only to find that there's something still missing.  Getting to the top of the pile isn't as satisfying as they expected it to be.  Things don't satisfy.  Wealth doesn't satisfy.  Position doesn't satisfy.  Even power doesn't satisfy.

So, what does bring genuine contentment?

A relationship with the One who made you and gave you your purpose!   That - and only that!

Tap into the power!

GOD'S CORRECTIVE LOVE

Eve and Adam did the very thing God told them NOT to do!  Lost their home because of it.

Moses got angry with the Israelites and hit the rock!  Lost the Promised Land as a result.

David seems to have thought he could get away with a little sinning.  A legacy of death and incest came because of it.

The Israelites must not have believed that God would actually let the Babylonians come and destroy their city.  Big mistake!

Jonah thought he could get away with saying "No" to God.  Wrong!

Annanias and Sapphira lied about a gift they gave the church.  It was the last thing they ever did!

With this evidence - and much more - why do we think we can get away with ignoring, disobeying, and defying God?

Do we think the changeless God has changed?

Or do we think that somehow we're an exception?

God punishes evil and does whatever He needs to do to bring the wanderer back to His ways.

Much of the pain being experienced in our culture today is God's corrective love!  He is trying to hedge His beloved children in and bring them back to Himself.  He loves us!  He wants us to walk in His ways!

He loves us too much to let us go on in our rebellion.

LEARNING THE HARD WAY

II Chronicles 33 tells us about Manasseh's life.

His father, Hezekiah, had been King of Judah for twenty-nine years.  Hezekiah had been a good, God-serving king!

Manasseh became king when he was twelve years old.  That means he was born when his dad was forty-two years old.  Although we have no details, Manasseh chose to rebel against his father's values - and therefore against God.

The Bible describes him as follows:
v.2  -  ...it was an evil reign, for he encouraged his people to worship the idols of the heathen nations...
v.9  -  ...Manasseh encouraged the people...to do even more evil than the nations the Lord destroyed when Israel entered the land.

But here's the critical line:
v.10  -  Warnings from the Lord were ignored by both Manasseh and his people.

So:
v.11  -  ...God sent the Assyrian armies, and they seized Manasseh with hooks and bound him with chains and carted him away to Babylon.

THE BEGINNINGS OF PAY TV

It was 1980.  Travis was four and loved watching Sesame Street.

I was serving the McClellandtown Free Methodist Church.  They had decided to have a revival and invited Reverend O. R. Tessaro as the evangelist.

I had known Brother Tessaro for years and had been in his revival meetings many times.  He was one of the best known and loved evangelists in the denomination.  He made frequent trips to Brazil.  He had been a car salesman before coming to Christ.  He was a statesman of the church and was well known throughout the denomination!

We invited him to stay in the parsonage with us.  He agreed to stay one night.  Then another.  Then another.  We realized it was his way of keeping the door open to travel home, if something didn't work to his liking.

He was a gracious guest!  He spent all morning studying and praying;  then came down for lunch.

The first day that he came down for lunch, Travis was sitting on the couch watching Sesame Street.  Brother Tessaro came down the stairs and turned the TV to the news.  Travis went off!  I left the room and told Debbie to stay out of the living room!

Eventually, things calmed down.  We had a nice lunch!

The next day, around noon, Brother Tessaro came down the stairs again.  He walked to the TV and turned it to the news;  then he walked to where Travis was sitting AND HANDED HIM A QUARTER!!!!

And 'Pay TV' was born!

DON'T GO TO CHURCH TODAY!

It's Sunday.  Christians around the world will get up and go to church.  It's a good thing!

However, in doing so we are missing a primary concept taught in the New Testament.  That concept:   Church is not something we go to, it is something we are!

The Greek word translated "church" by the King James scholars was ecclesia.  It came from two ancient Greek words:  ecc meaning "out", and kaleo meaning "call".  Ecclesia was used in early Greek communities to refer to a group of people called out to make decisions regarding their government - particularly in Athens.

New Testament writers - under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit - chose this word to refer to gatherings of believers.  These "called out ones" were to serve His purposes in the world!

CONSIDER:
  • They were not just called ecclesia on the first day of the week!  They were ALWAYS the "called out ones."
  • Since the New Testament Church had no buildings until the end of the fourth century, it wasn't possible for these believers to confuse who they were with their building!
  • Because there was constant persecution during those four centuries, gathering together strengthened the believers as they faced unimaginable threats of violence!
  • These gatherings were times for strengthening one another, teaching one another, and encouraging one another in the midst of desperate times!
A sense of obligation was the farthest thing from the minds of these New Testament believers!  They were not fulfilling a ritual - they were struggling to survive!  The gospels and letters that would later be formed into our New Testament were the core of their teaching.  They passed hand-written copies of these from group-to-group to strengthen and unify the body of believers!

Do you begin to see how we have cheapened the original concept by morphing it from a called-out-people to a building?  In addition, we've allowed ourselves to think of the church as something we do one day a week.

Add to this the reality that the greatest revivals in history have taken place without the benefit of buildings.  We've already cited the New Testament growth during the first four centuries.  The explosive growth of the church in China since 1950 is another example.

Perhaps the best thing that could happen in America would be for the government to close all of our churches and forbid us to meet?  Then, perhaps, the church would become more than a ritual or obligation to us!

So, don't go to church today!  Instead, BE THE CHURCH!  And then BE THE CHURCH again tomorrow and the next day and the next...

KISSES FROM KATIE - BOOK REVIEW

The book was a gift to me as a result of attending Catalyst in Atlanta last October.  Katie Davis was interviewed at that event.  Her humility was on display for 12,000 young leaders as the event surprised her by flying her children to the United States for a surprise reunion!

Katie graduated from high school in Tennessee and persuaded her parents to let her go on a missions trip to Uganda.  Then, she postponed her college plans to return to Uganda for a year.  During that time, God gave her a large house to live in;  she wondered why?

Then, God began to bring young girls who desperately needed help to Katie .  First she took them in - then she - one-by-one - adopted them.  She's been serving there since 2007.

She speaks fluently of the extreme poverty she witnessed.  God moved her heart as she began to meet whatever needs she could.

In latter chapters she tells of going into Masese - a nearby garbage dump - where thousands live in unbelievable circumstances.  She began a ministry to women there.  They make necklaces and Katie's organization sends them to America to be sold.

I was deeply challenged as I read of her endless caring for the least of these.  She seems undaunted by the most extreme cases of sickness, poverty, and abandonment.

I was most moved by her description of giving up a relationship with her high school sweetheart.  Yet, her calling to serve Christ in Uganda gave her a greater joy than pursuing her own happiness in this prized relationship.

She repeatedly reminds the reader that she is not extraordinary, or unusually courageous.  Anyone can do what she is doing!  She is simply making herself available to God to serve His lost and hurting children!

HER OWN WORDS
"I am twenty years old and have fourteen children and four hundred more who all depend on me for their care.  Who are all learning to love Jesus and be responsible adults and looking up to me.  The reality of it all can be a bit overwhelming at times.  However, it is always pure joy.  There is a common misperception that I am courageous.  I will be the first to tell you that this is not actually true.  Most of the time, I am not brave.  I just believe in a God who will use me even though I am not."

RECOMMENDATION
I am writing this review on the morning after Jerry Sandusky's guilty verdict for abusing young boys.  Katie's story is the opposite!  Her love and care for children will challenge your heart!  This is not a book for comfort reading;  this book will change you!

Katie has initiated a ministry to the children of Uganda called Amazima - which means "truth" in the Luganda language.  You can read more about (or support) her ministry at http://www.amazima.org/   I highly recommend this book!

I AM RUINED

God uses books to change my heart!  I recently read a book, Kisses From Katie.  It's about Katie Davis. a young woman who - after graduating from high school - went to live in Uganda to serve the poor [book review coming soon].

Her story has challenged my heart so deeply.  I feel like Isaiah who had a vision of standing in the throne-room of God and being overwhelmed by what he witnessed!  His response:  (Isaiah 6:5  NASB)
Woe is me, for I am ruined!
Because I am a man of unclean lips,
and I live among a people of unclean lips;
for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
I have been shown a literary picture of the reality of true poverty through the sacrifice and genuine love of a young girl!  Her compassion has challenged me and the opulent life that I live.  Almost everything I do now is run through a filter of how my extravagance could have been re-routed to help Katie's kids.

I read Wes Stafford's book, Too Small To Ignore, last year and it had a similar impact on me.  God is clearly speaking to me about bringing my life into conformity with His compassion for the poor!

Last night, we ate in an exclusive restaurant in Baltimore, The Capital Grille.  Although, Travis picked up the bill, I suspect that it was for over $200.  I came home and wrestled to get to sleep.  How many children could have been sent to school for that sum?

We've stayed in hotels several times recently;  each time I pay the bill, I think about the children of Masese (Ugandan refuse dumps) who sleep in the dirt, wear no shoes, and go untreated for worms.  I think about orphans whose parents have died and who care for one another as best they can.

I know.  This Schindler-esque thinking can drive you crazy.  It can make you do radical things.  IT CAN RUIN YOUR LIFE!!

But, like Isaiah, now that I've seen the reality I must do something!  I've been shown the evil of an affluent society.  I've faced the reality of my complicity in this evil as a result of my ignorance and cold-heartedness.  I must do something...

HERE AM I, LORD, SEND ME!!!

DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN!

I just finished reading about King Jehoshaphat of Judah [II Chronciles 17-20].  He was thirty-five when he became king, and he reigned for twenty-five years.

This guy was fanatical about serving God!  He sent teachers throughout the land to teach the people the Scriptures.  He knocked down all the heathen altars and destroyed all the false idols.  As a result, God prospered him and gave him peace.  Jehoshaphat built up strong defenses and was an excellent administrator!

At one point, Jehoshaphat made an alliance with King Ahab of Israel by marrying his son to Ahab's daughter.

A few years later, Jehoshaphat was visiting King Ahab who talked him into merging forces to fight a foreign army.  In the battle, Ahab is killed but Jehoshaphat escaped.  Through a prophet, God admonished Jehoshaphat:  Should you be helping the wicked, and loving those who hate the Lord?

Jehoshaphat seems to have gotten the message:  So Jehoshaphat made no more trips to Israel after that, but remained quietly in Jerusalem.  Jehoshaphat went to work establishing judges and courts to serve the people throughout his land!

Before long, a three-nation force declared war on Judah.  Jehoshaphat prayed for God's protection publicly.  God promised to protect him and to defeat his enemies.  King Jehoshaphat led his people into battle by sending woshipers ahead of the troops!  God turned the three-nation force against each other and they slaughtered one another - leaving tremendous spoils for the people of Judah!

Then, before his story ends, the author includes the following post script:
But at the close of his life, Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, went into partnership with Ahaziah, king of Israel, who was a very wicked man.  They made ships [together].  Then [a prophet prophesied] against Jehoshaphat, telling him, 'Because you have allied yourself with King Ahaziah, the Lord has destroyed your work.'  So the ships met disaster and never arrived at [their destination].

GOD! YOUR EXPECTATIONS ARE SO HIGH!

I read this morning about King Asa of Judah (II Chronicles 15-17)

His story begins with the words:  Asa was careful to obey the Lord his God.  As a result, he enjoyed ten years of peace!

Then a massive army came against him from Ethiopia;  his troops were outnumbered two-to-one.  But Asa turned to God:  ...we trust in You alone to rescue us.  And God DID rescue him with an amazing victory!

After this victory, God assured Asa that if he would be faithful, he would enjoy peace.  Asa began a reform that included removing his own mother as queen-mother because she made an idol to a false god!  God honored Asa with twenty-five more years of peace!

In his thirty-sixth year, the king of Israel declared war on Asa.  As a result, Asa made a deal with the king of Syria - who agreed to threaten Israel!  Israel backed down!  Asa foiled his enemy and re-established peace!

Then a prophet of God visited him.

The prophet reminded Asa how God had delivered him from overwhelming forces earlier in his career.  Then the prophet asked why Asa had turned to a foreign king instread of turning to God for protection?  Then he pronounced:  What a fool you have been!  From now on you shall have wars.

I wish I could tell you that Asa repented.  He didn't.  He got mad at God!  He threw the prophet in jail!

Listen to this irony:  Three years later, Asa got a disease in his feet.  ...he didn't go to the Lord with the problem, but to the doctors.  so he died...

Sometimes God is so demanding!  His expectations for me are so high!  He expects me to constantly trust Him and never worry!  Doesn't He understand how hard this is for me to do?

Like Asa, sometimes I am capable of solving my own problems.

But God wants me to turn to Him with EVERYTHING!!!  And He will honor me when I do so!

But, if I start taking matters into my own hands - guess what?  He'll let me!  I may even resolve my problem;  but I forfeit the joy of partnering with God and allowing Him to work His wonders in and through me!

Lord,
Help me to live up to Your expectations!  Help me to turn to You first - ALWAYS!  Your Holy Spirit lives in me.  Through Him, constantly remind me to trust You!  And You will give me peace!
Oh Yeah!

OH NO!!! DON'T CLOSE THAT CHURCH!!!!

Can you imagine a church that was so connected to its community that the community would lament its closing?

Of course, a church that was truly connected to its community would never be closing - I know that!  But just use your imagination.

Imagine a church that was so vital to the community that the community couldn't picture going forward without its influence and participation!

Imagine a community that came to the church's rescue - just to keep it open and thriving.

Imagine a church that had made such a difference in its community - such an investment in the community - that the community cried out with one voice:  "Oh no!  You can't close that church!"

REALITY
Of course, this is not the case for the vast majority of churches!  Most communities would never even notice if its churches closed.

There are exceptions - and I'm grateful for that!  In my most recent community, the Catholic Church was at the center of almost everything the community did.  I believe there would be a community outcry if it was to suddenly be closed by its diocese.

But most churches are self-focused and self-serving.  They make few inroads of service to the community.  They do their own thing and exist for their own members instead of serving the people of the community.  SAD!

SOLUTION
Who can change this?

Is this the pastor's job?  Well. to some extent - Yes, it is!

Can he do it alone?  Of course not!

The church can only change its focus if the people change their focus!  The church is not an entity - it's PEOPLE!!!  People who serve God's purposes in the world!

A church that is vital to its community is made up of people who show a genuine interest in their community and serve joyfully in the name of Christ!  This is the kind of church that gives Christ a good name!

I TALK TO BIRDS

I do it frequently - almost every day.  I find the birds here in Savannah to be especially conversive.  I had quite a chat going with a group of them yesterday while we were waiting for a table at Molly's Restaurant.

I'm convinced that when I was walking daily in Poland Forest, I spoke with the same birds every day.  I think some of them actually saw me coming and called out to me!

I haven't quite mastered their language yet.  I basically repeat whatever they say to me.  That seems to make them happy.

Occasionally, I can tell that a bird is trying to locate me.  On a few occasions, I think they have figured out that I'm not a bird.  They usually stop talking with me at that point.  I suppose they feel deceived.

A few times I have been in the woods during the heat of the day when no birds are singing.  I have tried to get them to answer me.  I've had success a couple of times - when I have been persistent.  But it never seems to last very long.  I think it's their siesta time...

I'm pretty sure that birds communicate with each other.  I really have no idea what they're saying.  But I sure enjoy barging in on their conversations!

I particularly enjoy listening to their morning song and evening song.  They differ, you know.  The morning song is very happy and full of expectation!  The evening song is peaceful and communicates contentment!

Not a bad mantra for us humans too!

Look at the birds!  They don't worry about what to eat - they don't need to sow or reap or store up food - for your Heavenly Father feeds them.  And you are far more valuable to Him than they are.  Matthew 6:26  (LB)

CHRISTIANITY IN CHINA

Not to be surprised - I've been reading a lot about China recently.  Things like:
"The last 25 years have seen the greatest growth of the church since Pentecost - in Mainland China!"
"In Lanzhou, I witnessed 250 people being baptized."
"In Liaoning I saw hundreds gathering at 6 A.M. in the pitch dark to prepare for an 8 A.M. service that was packed with 1,000 worshippers."
Remember, all missionaries were expelled in 1952.  God, through His suffering people, has raised up to Himself a glorious church - and has done so largely without buildings.  He has also done so without programs, money, or western involvement!  Without western involvement, the Chinese church is NOT yet divided by denominationalism!

There are already more evangelicals in Mainland China than there are in the United States.  These evangelicals have a high view of the Bible, the Trinity, and the person of Christ!  For the most part, they hold to traditional premillenial eschatology and are open to charismatic gifts while avoiding extremism.

Yet there is a tremendous need for theological training!  About 20 seminaries produce pastors and leaders, but in most provinces the ratio of pastors to Christians ranges anywhere from 1/10,000 to 1/60,000.  That fact might raise appreciation in America for one's pastor/teacher!

Most of Chinese Christianity is marked by unimaginable poverty!  This poverty hinders the growth of the church as people struggle to survive.  Millions are heading for the major cities where they will not be able to find work.

While mainline denominational Christianity in the West has sunk largely into apostasy - in China, zealous and costly adherence to the biblical gospel has resulted in what is probably the greatest revival in church history!  Some wonder if this massive, Spirit-directed movement will provide the spiritual renewal and impetus for a major surge in worldwide evangelism in the 21st century?

Want to help?  Pray that:
  • God's Spirit will continue to guide this spiritual awakening.
  • government forces will see the advantages of a growing Christianity.
  • Western influences will not spoil the fervor of this awakening.
  • leaders will be called and trained to ground the church theologically!

NEGATIVE THINKING

Psalm 1:1-2   (NJB)
How blessed is anyone who rejects the advice of the wicked, and does not take a stand in the path that sinners tread, nor a seat in company with cynics, but who delights in the Law of Yahweh and murmurs His Law day and night.

Laurie Beth Jones writes:
Scientists are learning that the brain actually has grooves that come from repeated thinking.  That is why a thought becomes an action, and an action becomes a habit, and a habit becomes a pattern of behavior that is almost automatic.

It's like a drop of water that makes its way down a windowpane until it is joined by another drop of water;  the two of them join a cluster of water droplets, and then you have a rivulet that becomes a stream.

Look closely and you'll notice that the single drop moves more slowly than the rivulets.  Thoughts, like drops of water, seek the path of least resistance.

Thoughts do not edit themselves.  They "go with the flow," and are attracted to thoughts that look like them, if you will.  Hence, negative thoughts attract other negative thoughts.  [from Jesus Life Coach, pp.248-249]
An unbridled, untrained mind will inevitably become negative!  That's probably why the Apostle Paul told us (in Colossians 3:2):   Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on the earth.

In Philippians 4:8 ™ he also instructs us: …do your best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious – the best, not the worst;  the beautiful, not the ugly;  things to praise, not things to curse.

Again, the implication is that we can control (or manage) our thoughts.  However, when we fail to exercise this "control", our thoughts will revert to their default (carnal/sinful) setting:  negativity.

It seems that Bob Dylan was right back in the 60's when he crooned:
Gonna change my way of thinking
Make myself a different set of rules
Gonna put my good foot forward
And stop being influenced by fools
Jesus dealt with negative thoughts through scripture, prayer, and surrender of Himself to God.  He also demonstrated the wisdom and benefits of having a fun and interesting support group and community of friends.

What are you going to do about negative thought patterns that are ruining your life?  Be assured of this:  if you do nothing to change those thought patterns, THEY WILL NOT CHANGE!  You are in control of your thoughts - so TAKE CONTROL!!!

WHAT LOOKS BEST ISN'T ALWAYS BEST

In Genesis 13, Abram and Lot (his nephew) were traveling through the land of Canaan.  They had each become wealthy and owned much livestock.  Together, they became a burden on the land.  Rivalry broke out between their herdsmen.

Abram suggested that they part company to maintain peace and preserve the land.  He gave Lot first choice of the land:  (13:10-11,13  LB)
Lot took a long look at the fertile plains of the Jordan River, well-watered everywhere...the whole section was like the Garden of Eden...So that is what Lot chose...the men of this area were unusually wicked, and sinned greatly against Jehovah.
Lot did nothing wrong.  He was given a choice and he chose what looked to be the easiest and most fruitful area.

However, he failed to consider the impact that the area would have on him and his family spiritually!  This is a common mistake of younger people.  There is a tendency to think that the easy path is the best path.

Abram took the mountainous region.  This implied frequent moving and adversity.  Margaret Feinberg writes [in the organic God, p.116]
"God isn’t a fan of shortcuts when it comes to spiritual growth.  God places us in positions that are sometimes tougher than we would naturally choose, but they’re designed to make us stronger and healthier than we would otherwise be.”
The next chapter tells of Lot being caught in a war and taken captive.  Uncle Abram had to come and rescue him!

Then, of course, eventually, God decides to wipe out Sodom and Gomorrah.  But, thanks to Uncle Abram's prayers, Lot and his family are rescued.

Lot's legacy is filled with rebellion and incest.  Abram's legacy is a path of obedience and faithfulness.

What looks best isn't always best!  Learn to hit the 'pause button' when it comes to major decisions!  Listen carefully to see if God is trying to guide you!

GIVING CATALYZES GIVING!

In the last chapter of I Chronicles, David is coming to the end of his reign as king of Israel.  Although God did not allow him to build the Temple, he was permitted to gather wealth and resources for the massive project.

In addition, God gave David a detailed blueprint for the building.  Like Moses, who only got to see the Promised Land from a distant mountaintop, David only got to see the Temple in his mind's eye.

But David had seen the goodness of God!  He had a clear vision of how great God is!  David wanted this Temple to exceed anything that had ever been built on the earth!  Honoring God became David's most important goal!

He says:   (vs.1-3  LB)
My son Solomon, whom God has chosen to be the next king of Israel, is still young and inexperienced, and the work ahead of him is enormous;  for the temple he will build is not just another building - it is for the Lord God himself!  Using every resource at my command, I have gathered as much as I could for building it - enough gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and great quantities of onyx, other precious stones, costly jewels, and marble.  And now, because of my devotion to the Temple of God, I am giving all of my own private treasures to aid in the construction.  This is in addition to the building materials I have already collected.
When the leaders of Israel saw David's generosity, they immediately responded with similar largeness of heart - giving even more, collectively, than David had given!

GIVING CATALYZES GIVING!!!

Could this happen today?

Could massive generosity of heart stimulate great giving by others?

Remember what initiated David's generosity?  It was a magnified realization of the goodness of God and how vast and powerful and magnificent God was!!!  David had built palaces for himself and his family, yet God still lived in a tent.

When this realization hit David, his heart changed.  From that point forward, he could not rest until he had provided for God's Temple.

What will it take to change my heart?  How do I get a similar new-view of God?  How should I channel my generosity?  How do I do so in a way that honors God without drawing the spotlight to myself?  How will others even know that I've given sacrificially?  Will it impact them, if they know?

What would it be like to get so excited about who God is that I just wanted to give everything to bring worldwide attention to Him

AN ATTACK OF COMPASSION

We were grabbing lunch in a MacDonald's in Dublin, West Virginia.

He was mopping the floor.

His hair was white.  He seemed mildly handicapped physically;  he sort of shuffled when he walked.  He appeared to be in his mid-seventies.

There was a group of men sitting in one section talking and laughing;  all were his age.  He seemed uncomfortable around them.

As a matter of fact, he seemed uncomfortable generally.  At one point, he simply stood in an out-of-the-way section with his head down.

My compassion meter went off-the-chart along with my imagination.

Did he need to work?  Or did his wife die and he just wanted a reason to be out-of-the-house?

Did a company down-size him and leave him without a pension?

Does he have a family?  Do his kids care about him?

Does he live alone?  Does he have any friends?  Does he ever laugh?

I wanted to invite him to sit down with me for awhile.  I wanted to empty my pocket into his.  I wanted to wrap my arms around him and tell him that he mattered.

I did something better than all these:  I sat and prayed for him throughout my lunch.  I lifted him to the God who made him.  I asked God to comfort him.  I asked our Heavenly Father to open the windows of Heaven and pour down a blessing greater than this man could hold.

And today, I find myself wondering how God is answering my prayer?  What good things are happening for this man as a result of my intercession?  How has our marvelous God chosen to comfort him?

PRAYER CHANGES EVERYTHING!!!

SOVEREIGN SECURITY

There have been two times that I've been unemployed for a brief period.

There was a season of our married life when we were in dire straights financially.  We were advised to file for bankruptcy.  We chose not to go that route.

We've faced the reality of tight finances for Christmases and vacations.

All of this was a combination of two expensive masters degrees, low income, and unwise management of our resources.

But this is not about procuring sympathy.

Throughout our lives, God has provided for us with such consistency that we have been amazed over and over again!  We are well aware that we have not deserved His help.  Yet, repeatedly, God has been good to us!

And it continues!  When we made our decision to step away from the pastoral ministry and go to China, we knew there would be financial challenges.  While paying off our debt, we have been able to set aside some funds for retirement.  We figured that we would simply tap into those resources.  Part of the beauty of going to China is that I will be paid;  therefore, we don't have to raise support.

Yet, in recent weeks, God has opened up heaven itself to us and poured out blessings beyond our wildest dreams

God has poured out His goodness to us through FMCC and special friends to such an extent that all of our needs have been met and we should not have to tap into our retirement savings!  We are overwhelmed with God's kindness and the generosity of the people He has used to bless us!  To be quite frank - we're humbled.

It's wonderful to live in a country that provides unemployment benefits, welfare, and social security.  However, I'm going to continue to put my confidence in God's SOVEREIGN SECURITY!

How about you?  Remember:  He doesn't love us any more than He loves you!

VISITING CHURCHES

We're on vacation in Inwood, West Virginia (near historic Harpers Ferry).  After reviewing a number of churches, we decided to attend a United Methodist Church within two blocks of our hotel.  Worship was at 9:30 AM.

We arrived and entered just as worship was about to begin.  The front door was sort of stuck - we had to yank hard to get it open;  it seems all the regular attenders enter by a back door.  No greeter or usher.  No sign of contemporary instruments;  one woman at an organ.  Part way into the service a man across the aisle handed me his bulletin.

There were about thirty-five people present:  several older women, several older couples, several middle-aged couples, and one young family.  An older gentleman came from a back room and began the service;  we realized later that he was the pastor.  He led the entire service:  Call to Worship, Affirmation of Faith, Responsive Reading, Scripture Lessons, Announcements, Prayer Concerns, The Lord's Prayer, The Gloria, and the Doxology.  His attempts at humor were sardonic - at best.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to one woman and "Happy Anniversary" to another!  Then came the sermon, "How Great Thou Art", "God Be With You Till We Meet Again", The Benediction, and The Threefold Amen."  Three people greeted us as we left:  they all mentioned my singing voice.

Now I want to be honest.  As poorly as the scriptures were read, they still spoke to me with power!  I enjoyed singing hymns again.  Some of the rituals mentioned above have tremendous meaning - if you stay focused as you read them!  However, we felt as though we had entered a time-warp!  There was no evidence of caring for the lost.  We felt unwanted and unappreciated.

It was ironic that the Old Testament Lesson was from I Samuel 4, where the high priest (Eli's)  daughter-in-law gives birth to a son on the same day that her husband, his brother, and Eli die.  She also dies giving birth just after naming her newborn son, Ichabod - meaning "the glory has departed".  I found the double-meaning of this scripture ironic...

On our way back to the hotel we passed a warehouse with a sign in front that read:  CONNECTION COMMUNITY CHURCH - Worship at 10:00 AM.  The parking lot was jammed!  It was 10:20 AM.  I quickly parked and we entered;  even though late, we were greeted outside the main door.  We found our way through a fellowship area and were directed up some steep stairs to a large area packed with over 300 people (predominantly younger) singing with a Spirit-filled worship team!  We got in on one song.

Then came an amazing, powerful video about God's grace being available to anyone;  it left me in tears!  Then the pastor came forward and gave a message on "The Hatfields and McCoys" based on scriptures from the book of Ruth.  Totally relevant and applicable (I could say so much more about his message)!  Then the worship team led in a song I did not know - but loved!  Several went forward to pray.

The pastor came to close the service with a challenge and an enticement to be there for Father's Day!  Music and video played as we left.  Several spoke with us and invited us back.  One gentleman explained how the owner of this apple factory had been generous in making it available to the church - which only began a year ago!!  He explained that their story is laced with miracles of God's provision!

We were blessed - SO BLESSED!!!!  It's evening now, and my mind is still churning with the contrast between these two congregations!  If I lived in this area, I know where I'd worship - and I'd want all of my friends and family to worship there with me!!!!

Don't be mistaken - RELEVANCE MATTERS!!!

A BAR OF SOAP?

I just did something that I haven't done for years:  I washed my hands using a bar of soap!

C'mon - have you used a bar of soap lately?  Bars of soap are obsolete!  Unsanitary!  Who used that bar of soap last?

Now we use push-pump bottles or dispensers.  Sometimes we by-pass water altogether and use alcohol-based cleaners.

The fact that Ivory floats is meaningless today - who cares?  It always left a ring in the tub anyway!

Remember those cloth towell dispensers in public restrooms?  You pull down a fresh section and dry your hands.  Whose idea was that?  Who re-rolled all those long, cloth towells and stuffed them back in the dispenser?

Plus, who wants to touch the handle to turn on the water?  There are all kinds of germs waiting there to leap onto your hands and infect you!  Not to worry.  Now, you just hold your hands under the fawcett and the water automatically gives you a measured spurt to clean your hands.

Then you hold your hands under a hot-air machine and it magically comes on to dry your hands.

Now, if the door would just automatically open so I don't have to touch that door handle - where more of those germs are lurking...

PHONE TREES

To live in the 21st century is to face the reality of dealing with phone trees.  Who would have thought thirty or forty years ago that we'd talk to computers and have them respond to our requests?

"Press 7 to continue..."

"OK, please wait while I see if I can locate your information..."

Wouldn't it be interesting if we could hear all the comments that are being made between these instructions?  Maybe not!  C'mon, we've all made the comments.  I've noticed that my volume tends to increase the longer I am held on the line.

"Please provide your account number to continue..."

"Thank-you!  I'll look up that account now."

People use all kinds of tricks to short-cut to a real, live person!  Some start angry and stay angry!  Some just constantly choose the option that is most likely to get them to a real person.  I believe these systems are set up to encourage you to give up.  Only the truly persistent get what they want!

Last fall I tried to make changes to my AT&T account.  After repeated efforts to negotiate these changes, I tried the email route.  I connected with a customer service representative who quickly and courteously made the changes.  I was thrilled and told her so.  I asked if I could keep her address handy for any future needs I might have - she said, "Yes!"  I also asked her if she was single and told her that I had two single sons!

"Please hold the line while I connect you to one of our customer service representatives."

ALL WE WANT IS TO SPEAK TO A REAL, LIVE PERSON!!!  PLEASE!!!

By-the-way, I typed this article while holding the line with Travelocity!  Furthermore, I was totally satisfied with their service - once I got through to a REAL PERSON!!!!!   :-)

THE BURDEN IS LIFTING

Twenty-five years ago, I was pastor at the Oakland Free Methodist Church in East Liverpool, Ohio.  I was thirty-five years old, but found myself leading a Pastoral Support Group of area pastors - almost all of them older than me.

One member of the group was Fred Shreffler.  Fred had been Debbie's pastor for many years.  He was seminary educated (rare for his day).  In my opinion, he was the best Bible teacher that the Pittsburgh Conference ever produced.  A quiet man - unassuming.

When Fred opened his Bible and began to teach the whole group fell silent as we eagerly listened and hung on his words!

One day, as Fred was approaching retirement, he told us a story.  He told us about receiving his first solo appointment to the New Cumberland, West Virginia, Free Methodist Church.  He explained that as he traveled - alone - down Route 2, he felt a burden begin to settle on his shoulders.

Now every pastor understands this language.  It's a burden of responsibility.  It's the care of a shepherd for his sheep.  When is a pastor not a pastor?  It's a 24/7 awareness that you could - at a moment's notice - be called into service!

Fred closed his story with a smile, then said:  "Just now, the burden is beginning to lift!"  I never forgot it.  I was happy for Fred.  We were all happy for Fred!

And now, twenty-five years later, I too am feeling the burden lift!  More than a few people have observed a light-heartedness in me over recent weeks.  It's a good feeling.  Joy flows a bit more freely.  Laughter comes a little easier and with greater frequency.

Ministry is my calling!  I have loved my role.  It'll be strange - in future weeks - not preparing to preach!  I'm moving on to new roles.  We have God's approval on our actions.  We look forward to our new status as missionaries with great anticipation, excitement, and expectation!

All to Jesus I surrender, all to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him, in His presence daily live!
I surrender all.  I surrender all.
All to Thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all.

WHY I'M NOT A HUGGER

Reason #1

I was born in 1952.  I weighed over eight pounds at birth.  My mother was having difficulty birthing me.  The solution at that time was to break the baby's collar-bone.  Dr. Chadwick broke my collar-bone and I entered the world.

I assume that I was taped up and unable to be handled for the first weeks of my life.  This fact very conveniently explains everything that is wrong with me!  Including why I'm not a hugger!

Reason #2

My Dad was a long-term member (over 25 years) of the Pittsburgh Conference (Free Methodist Church) Stationing Committee.  This committee was responsible for appointing pastors to their churches.  It involved working closely with the area bishop and conference superintendents [back then Pittsburgh Conference had four superintendents].

This work required strict confidentiality.  Dad carried this responsibility with great seriousness - it was a burden.

Although I never heard him break a confidentiality, certain things would leak out from time-to-time.  All-the-while, I was recording this data.  One of the things I repeatedly heard him say was, "If pastors could just learn to keep their hands off of women!"  Apparently the Stationing Committee had to deal repeatedly with charges and allegations against pastors because of inappropriate relationships.

I received my call to ministry at the age of seventeen.  Then came college, marriage, and seminary.  When I assumed responsibility for my first church, guess what rule I put into effect?

I was so strict about this that I didn't even extend my hand when greeting women upon entering or leaving the church.  Fairly soon, this created a problem for me.  In my fourth year of ministry, a college-aged woman spoke with me privately and asked why I didn't care for her.  When I proclaimed that I did indeed care for her and her family, she explained that it didn't feel like I cared - because I never touched her!

I've learned to moderate my touch over the years - and will occasionally offer a hug;  but my Dad's tapes continue to play in my mind - even after thirty-seven years in the ministry!

MY FINAL LOG ENTRY

When I graduated from Roberts Wesleyan College, I was hired to be a Pastoral Apprentice at the Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church for the summer.  Dr. V. J. Mannoia was the Senior Pastor.  He put me under the charge of Associate Pastor (and later bishop) Richard Snyder.

Although I didn't have a great deal of access to Dick, the times I had were very valuable!  On one occasion I asked him about a book that he seemed always to be writing in.  He explained that it was a type of log-book where he kept details of his activities.  Apparently, lay leaders had questioned him about the use of his time and this was his solution.

I took the lesson to heart.  Throughout the years I developed systems to help me record my activities.  Doing so has made it very easy to develop a monthly report for the leadership boards of the churches I have led.

My most recent system utilizes a steno pad.  On the left side I log my home and personal activities in quick, abbreviated notes.  On the right side, I log my pastoral activities with times, names, details, and various contacts.  I began this sytem in May of 1999, and finished Sunday in my 16th steno pad!

It occurred to me Sunday morning that I would no longer have to report to a leadership team.  Any reason for logging information had evaporated.

I admit that I've had a few neurotic moments where I've felt like sitting down and catching it up.  But as day passes to day, I'm feeling increasingly FREE!

Just don't ask me what I did yesterday - because now I probably can't tell you...
