POOR SHEPHERDS

"Why do you say 'Poor Shepherds'?"

"Because they had a low-paying job?"

"No."

"Because they were the lowest rung of Judean society?"

"No."

"Because they were despised by most people?"

"No."

"Because they weren't permitted to testify in court?"  [The word of a shepherd was considered unreliable;  they were thought of as chronic liars.]

"No."

"Because they were often without family?"

"No."

"Because some of them were fugitives?"

"No."

"Then why do you refer to them as poor?"

"Because no one would believe them!  They had seen the most incredible sight ever witnessed by human eyes!  The veil of Heaven had been lifted for them.  They had seen thousands of angels glorifying God!  Their dreams would replay this scene for the rest of their lives;  but when they spoke of it, no one would believe them!"

"Poor shepherds!"
